Warren Buffett recommended these no-nonsense books

Image
I'm super grateful about all the learnings I got from Warren Buffett (and you can read about, where to learn directly from Buffet in my previous blog post: Free Resources to Learn from Warren Buffett ). But who was Buffett inspired by? Where did he acquire his knowledge? I've added a list of books that Buffett has mentioned over time. Fred Schwed: Where Are the Customers' Yachts?  This is truly one of my favorite books because the point is so awesome, and it’s packed with humor. The title refers to a person visiting New York asking bankers and brokers where their customers yachts are at. I wonder if this (accurate) Warren Buffett quote was inspired by this book: “Wall Street is the only place that people drive to in a Rolls Royce to take advice from people who ride the subway.”   John Kenneth Galbraith: The Great Crash   recommended by Warren Buffett at the 2020 Berkshire Hathaway Shareholder meeting. You can find the book as physical copy, audio book and ebook. I listened

Question: How much $ do I need to start investing?

Image
My friend Anette asked me: How much money do I need to get started with investing? The minimum to get started investing in a company is really the price of the stock. Find the price of your “wonderful company” - you can get started buying just 1 share and add more over time. Remember, we only invest in wonderful companies. So to us value investors, the answer is not simple, because we don't just pick a stock and invest it. We do our due diligence and a lot of work before we invest. We see ourselves as owners of the company and by buying a stock we are buying a piece of that company. “If you aren't willing to own a stock for ten years, don't even think about owning it for ten minutes.” Warren Buffett   You have a little savings you can invest Because of fees I recommend buying stocks for $1000 per order... If you have the money. Though interest rates are extremely low, don't borrow money to invest. You have a some savings to invest If you have savings, and you've us

Question: Signe, what is your first steps when finding a wonderful company to invest in?

Image
I got this question the other day via private message on Instagram  and the post quickly got traction (compared to other posts I've shared), so I thought it would be valuable to share here on the blog too. Question: Signe, what is your first steps when finding a wonderful company to invest in? 1. I find the company because it’s:  a product I love to use,  it’s a service which delights me  or a tool (physical or digital) I prefer use at work  I check if the company is publicly traded. You find this information by simply searching the product name to find out which company produces it (or if you already know, search for the company name) as well as the search term "publicly-traded company". The result will show you wether or not the company offers shares to the public. 2. I calculate how many years it will take the company to pay off its long term debt. If it will take the management more than 3 years to pay off the long term debt, I don’t move on with this company.  The wa

Use Objectives and Key Results to achieve investing goals

Image
For any type of venture you embark on it’s important to set goals. What is special value investing versus other types of trading or speculation, is that the action of buying the stock and watching your stock’s movements is the least important part of the process. Your personal growth path and investigating businesses is much more important. Setting goals is key in order to keep you on the path. I have a money growth focused goal and mind growth focus goals. Today I'd like to share these goals with you to hopefully inspire you to set your own goals. I use some frameworks that you can copy and use for yourself. Money Growth Goals I use the OKR (Objective-Key Result) methodology for my goal setting but there are other methods ex. SMART goals. OKR is my preferred type because it’s crisp and clear and ambitious. If you want to learn more about OKR’s there’s a couple of great videos out there for example this TED Talk with John Doerr . Objective:  Freedom to focus on my passion and recei

An investor's artifact: the checklist. You can download it for free

One of the most important artifacts or tools for investors is our “checklist”. A checklist should be personal and will be shaped over time by your own learnings, but I’ll get you started with a simple checklist.  Sign up for my newsletter and receive a free checklist - perfect for a beginner or as inspiration for the more advanced investor. Download Checklist The checklist I'll share with you is meant to get you started as a value investor. As you progress with your value investing practice, you’ll want to add more questions, more in-depth calculations of company numbers and ensure you ask the critical questions and reflect on your own biases. I have several checklists and it takes me extensive time to complete them. Several hours spent and months of studying. I must admit, I have a wonderful time digging into a company. Charlie Munger describes it this way: “You need a different checklist and different mental models for different companies. I can never make it easy by saying, ‘He

My favorite quotes from Berkshire Hathaway 2021 Annual Meeting

Image
Again this year Yahoo Finance live broadcasted the Berkshire Hathaway Annual Meeting. I'm super grateful to be able to attend this meeting from the other side of the world, so a big thanks to Yahoo for providing this value.   Overall a great meeting with some fantastic learning opportunities and humorous quotes. Great curation of questions from Becky Quick which allowed both wisdom and humor to be shared. In this post, I'll share the more entertaining parts - my favorite quotes. Warren Buffett:  "I am the chief risk officer of Berkshire" "If you’re looking for perfection – in your spouse, in companies – you’re not going to find it."  "They don’t require a lot of capital and they gush out capital." (about Apple, Microsoft and Google)  "Interest rates are to the value of assets what gravity is to matter."   "The gambling impulse in the world is very strong. It creates its own reality, and no one is going to tell when the clock strikes
