Where does Warren Buffett live? Your itinerary to Omaha

If you ever have the opportunity to visit Warren Buffett’s hometown Omaha in Nebraska, this is what you absolutely must do while you’re visiting:

Warren Buffett’s Home

You may think that a billionaire like Warren Buffett lives in a mansion in a gated community. But this couldn’t be farther from the truth. His house is a modest home in a quiet neighborhood of Omaha. It’s only a few minutes from Downtown Omaha yet the neighborhood is calm and quiet and absolutely lovely. It takes Warren Buffett approximately 7 minutes to drive from home to work at the Berkshire Hathaway HQ (unless he stops by at McDonalds – read below)

One thing I thought was sweet was the water dispenser for passing-by pets on the sidewalk outside the gate.

Gorat's Steakhouse

My husband and I had the most amazing experience at Gorat’s Restaurant, which is one of Buffett’s favorite places, where he takes family members and business contacts. By pure luck our waitress for the night was Rita – Buffett’s favorite waitress that he always requests whenever he visits Gorat’s. Rita gave us the most amazing experience because she invited us to eat in Buffett’s private dining room (!!!) and served all of his favorite foods: a salad with lots of delicious blue cheese, T-bone steak with spaghetti (yup – you read that right – a side of pasta with tomato sauce) and a root beer float served in one of the four glasses that Warren Buffett’s float comes in. Rita shared some beautiful and inspiring stories from her many encounters with Buffett, and I’m forever grateful for the memories that Rita gave us that night.

Berkshire Hathaway Headquarters

Warren Buffett’s company headquarters is only a short drive from his home. The office is in the one of the top floors in this high rise. When I booked our hotel, I only looked for hotel experience because I travel a lot with work, so when I’m off I want a hotel that doesn’t look like a business hotel. The day before our trip I was planning the route and saw that the hotel was located facing the Berkshire Hathaway building! And we were lucky to get a room on a top floor with a view to the building and offices. Never have I been so grateful about having such a view from my room. Haha! I could see the characteristic blinds and lamps in the Berkshire office.

Borsheims

The service at Borsheims jewellery store is sublime. From the moment we entered the store we were greeted, and the mood was cheery and friendly. The store is huge – the largest jewelry store in floor feet in the world according to Donna, the kind sales associate we talked to during our visit. Borsheims is a Berkshire Hathaway company and if you’re in Omaha, you should definitely go visit the store.

The Bookworm Omaha

The Bookworm is known to be packed with people during the Berkshire Annual Shareholder Meeting that takes place every year in May. The reason the store is so popular at this time, is because Warren Buffett selects a handful of books and shareholders receive a discount on these books during the meeting but also because the store houses Author Panels (ex. with authors of investing books) and related events during the annual meeting weekend. The section of Berkshire related books is easy to find because the shelf is marked with a big sign. I made a live video on Facebook with my purchases here.

Nebraska Furniture Mart

Nebraska Furniture Mart is a huge – no humongous! furniture store… imperium in Omaha. We were overwhelmed with the size of the place that counts numerous of large storage buildings packed with everything imaginable – furniture, electronics, carpets and more. The story goes that Mrs. B. – the founder and owner of the store – caught the attention of Buffett because of her great sales talent. There are many stories about her (find them on the internet) and when Buffett bought 90% of the store and Mrs. B. had to retire, she was so bored that she had to find something to do. So, she opened a competitor furniture outlet on the other side of the street. Buffett ended up buying this store too and Mrs. B worked there until she died at age 104.

Where does the Berkshire Hathaway Annual Meeting for Shareholders take place? In downtown Omaha at the CHI Health Center - a huge convention center with a large arena for ten-thousands spectators, exhibition halls, meeting rooms, and in generel great convention facilities. It was previously known as CenturyLink Center Omaha, so you might find sources that describes the annual meeting to take place at the CenturyLink, however today the name of the venue is CHI Health Center.

McDonalds

Go past McDonalds and eat breakfast the Buffett way. According to the HBO Documentary “Becoming Warren Buffett” the Oracle of Omaha’s breakfast depends on the stock market on the day. If the market is optimistic, so is Buffett’s breakfast with a $3.17 bacon, egg and cheese biscuit.

“When I’m not feeling quite so prosperous, I might go with the $2.61, which is two sausage patties”, Buffett explains in the documentary Becoming Warren Buffett (watch additional video footage from the documentary – find link to material here).

Warren Buffett met actor Bill Murrey for ice cream at this hip ice cream shop. Every day this ice cream shop has a special selection of custom flavors and it’s definitely worth the visit if not to walk in Warren Buffett’s footsteps, then for the delicious, quality ice cream.
